BIS recognizes laboratories in India through its Laboratory Recognition Scheme (LRS). It is controlled by the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, and the BIS Rules, 2018. Recognized laboratories have the unique advantage of being considered for testing of Standard (ISI) Marked samples by BIS as well as prospective applicants and existing BIS licensees for conformity assessment against applicable Indian Standards.

The following steps must be considered when applying for the Laboratory Recognition Scheme:
1. First fill out the application form. Collect proper documents for the laboratory recognition scheme. The application is submitted to the authorized laboratory of the BIS with authority over the cases
2. BIS Laboratories staff will review applications and verify documents. The application must meet the BIS Requirements. If the application meets the standards, the officer will record it for further processing.
3. Auditors shall be hired based on BIS requirements. The lab would get information from the audit team within 7 days. The BIS would generally perform the audit 15 days after receiving the certificate of compliance.
4. Auditor conduct an initial audit to fix laboratory compliance with the recognition scheme. If they have allowed the laboratory to be recognized, they must follow the terms and conditions. Once the auditor is satisfied, the Laboratory Recognition Scheme certificate will be issued.

The applicant’s laboratory must meet the qualifying standards specified above before applying. The applicant lab must provide the following documents along with the application form:
• The applicant laboratory’s legal certifications.
• If the applicant lab is a limited company, provide the Company Registration Certificate and Memorandum of Agreement.
• Partnership Deed (if any)
• CA Certification.
• Certificate for Shop and Establishment Act registration.
• Government notification that the application company is a legal, government-registered corporation.
• The applicant’s lab must complete several processes to be recognized as a government laboratory.
• Documents required to prove an abroad lab’s legal identification.
• Detailed authentication data for the lab location.
• Firm or industry certification via registration.
• Documents from Municipal Corporations, Drug Controllers, Pollution Control Boards, and other BIS-designated locations.

• The names of the products and a list of all the Indian standards that must be maintained.
