Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) was established on September 7, 1970. The board was constituted under the Maharashtra Prevention of Water Pollution Act of 1969. The state adopted the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, of 1974, a major part of Indian legislation aimed at protecting the environment and resources. The MPCB was established under Section 4 of the Water (P&CP) Act, 1974. But in 1983, the state established the Air (P&CP) Act 1981. The board also serves as the state board under Section 5 of this Act.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board is controlled by the state government’s Environment Department. The whole state has been designated as an Air Pollution Control Area since 1996.
MPCB is enforcing many environmental laws in Maharashtra. MPCB had established recommendations and limits under several categories such as Coastal Regulation Zone and Eco-Sensitive Zone (Mahabaleshwar Eco-Sensitive Zone, Murud Zanjira Area (Raigad), Antop Hill (Mumbai), Western Ghats, and so on). The board has also established special instructions for chicken farms and brick kilns. The MPCB is in charge of authorizing and licensing environmental quality (air pollution, water quality, noise pollution) and waste management (hazardous, biomedical, plastic, and e-waste).

Regulatory issues will completely disappear after obtaining the necessary approvals and the required certificates from the MPCB. MPCB plays a very important role in ensuring that businesses and industries fully comply with their environmental laws and regulations.
Different certificates are, Consent to Establish (CTE), Consent to Operate (CTO), and their renewals, issued by MPCB. These certificates are granted to industries to ensure complete compliance with environmental standards during construction and operations phases.
What actually happens is that, first, you log into MAITRI website and register yourself, then fill in the Common Application Form (CAF), select the desired service, and finally upload the required documents evidencing the application. Thereafter, the processing of the application is done and the business gets appropriate certifications.
MPCB consents, for instance, Consent to Operate (CTO), are to be renewed at certain intervals. Renewal of consents makes companies continue to meet environmental regulations and implement required measures for pollution control.
Maharashtra Pollution Control Board deals with various aspects such as enforcement of environmental laws in the state, measuring pollution levels, inspecting industries for compliance, and promoting those practices that are environment-friendly. It helps such businesses adopt protective pollution control measures for the salvation of the environment and public health.
